The ATM Straddle Explained: Why Traders Watch the Premium

What an at-the-money straddle is, why its combined premium is a live read on expected movement, and how to interpret a rising or falling straddle premium chart.

A straddle is simply buying (or selling) the call and the put at the same strike. At the at-the-money (ATM) strike — the one nearest spot — the combined premium is one of the most useful live numbers in the whole market.

What the ATM straddle premium tells you

The ATM call + ATM put premium is, roughly, the market's price for how far the underlying is expected to move by expiry — in either direction. If NIFTY's ATM straddle is trading at 120 points, the market is implicitly pricing a move of around that size. That makes the straddle premium a real-time expected-move gauge.

Why it rises and falls

  • Rising premium — implied volatility is expanding: an event is approaching, or uncertainty is climbing. Option buyers are paying up.
  • Falling premium — volatility is bleeding out and theta (time decay) is grinding the premium down, especially on expiry day. This is why straddle sellers love a quiet, range-bound session.

Reading the premium chart

Charting the straddle premium through the day turns those forces into a picture. A steady decline is classic decay; a sharp spike flags an event or a volatility shock. Because the premium already blends both legs, one line captures the market's whole expected-move story.

Why STRYKR charts the "lowest" straddle

STRYKR doesn't just chart the exact ATM strike — it charts the lowest straddle among the strikes nearest ATM (where both legs are actually trading). An adjacent strike is often a rupee or two cheaper, and using the genuinely lowest one avoids a stale, illiquid leg distorting the read.
